Historically, Parkersburg's rapid development can be attributed to its position at the junction of the Ohio and Little Kanawha Rivers. Some of the rarest species of butterflies found in the state are in these open areas, including the Grizzled Skipper (Pyrgus centaureae wyandot), Olympia Marble (Euchloe olympia), and Cobweb Skipper (Hesperia m. metea). And, of course, many species inhabit urban and suburban yards and gardens. Each species account provides a description and information on distribution, habitat, life history, nectar sources, and larval host plants.
